School Newsletter 11th July 2016
Dear Parents and Carers,
Hand to Mouth Workshop
I am writing to thank the School Trustees for so generously supporting the recent workshop in school which helped our leavers focus on transition and help them prepare for their new schools. Other pupils had opportunity to learn about the different style of crosses in the Christian faith.

Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our New Parents Meeting last Wednesday evening, we hope you found this helpful. It was lovely to meet you all.

New KS2 Assessments in 2016
The 2016 KS2 assessments are the first which assess the new, more challenging national curriculum which was introduced in 2014. New tests and interim frameworks have been introduced to reflect the revised curriculum. Results are no longer reported as levels, and each pupil has received their test results as a scaled score and teacher assessments based on the standards in the interim framework. The expectations for pupils at the end of KS2 have been raised.
The expected standard in the tests is a scaled score of 100 or above. The scaled score range runs from 80 to 120 with 100 as the expected standard. Figures for 2016 are not comparable to those in previous years because of the changes set out above. Under the previous system, 80% of pupils achieved the standard that was expected. At this stage ‘53% of pupils achieved the new expected standard in 2016 when being taught and assessed against the higher standards expected under the new curriculum.’ (See below)

The chart above outlines attainment at Kirby Hill for those pupils who reached the expected standards at the end of Year 6. Attainment in the tests is highest in grammar, punctuation and spelling and maths at 76.2%. This is higher than the national average. Attainment in reading at 71.4% is also higher than the national outcomes. At 71.4% attainment in the writing teacher assessment is lower than in any of the test subjects. As you know grammar, punctuation and spelling and writing have been a key focus for improvement in school and will continue to be so. Finally when the results for reading, writing and maths are combined, Kirby Hill is also above the national results. Well done Year 6!
KS1 Results 2016
Currently there is no comparable data available for the end of KS1 results.
Thirsk Swimming Competition
Our Upper KS2 children represent the school at swimming tomorrow morning. I am sure you would like to join me in wishing them well for the competition.
Parent Consultations
We look forward to seeing you at our termly parent consultation meetings this week.
We are continuing to try the new initiative from last term. Parent consultations for Minster, Priory and Temple Classes will be held in the School hall both Wednesday and Thursday. Mrs Moulton will also be in the School hall representing governors from 4 to 5pm Wednesday 13th July. We do still need an additional parent governor if you would like to speak with her about the role of governors.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs V Farby
