House Teams
At Kirby Hill, our House System was developed in response to a child-led request to be part of teams and earn points together. The School Council played a key role in shaping the system, choosing the names, themes, and colours for each house. After much discussion, the children decided to name our houses after historic Yorkshire abbeys:
-
Bolton Abbey
-
Fountains Abbey
-
Jervaulx Abbey
-
Whitby Abbey
Our House System helps us recognise and celebrate positive behaviours, encouraging children to be kind, caring, polite, and respectful, as well as to show effort, resilience, and excellence in their work.
How it works:
-
Children are placed in a house when they join our school. We make small adjustments each year to balance numbers and ensure siblings are in the same house.
-
House points can be awarded by any member of staff or visitor for positive behaviours, good work, helpfulness, or demonstrating our school values.
-
Each week, our House Captains collect and collate the points for their teams, announce the weekly winners in Celebration Assembly, and present the Weekly Star Award to the house that has earned the most points.
-
At the end of each half term, the winning team enjoys a special treat - this might be something like extra playtime or a non-uniform day, with the House Captains helping to decide.
Children compete in their houses for a variety of activities, including intra-school competitions and Sports Day, helping to build teamwork, friendships, and a strong sense of belonging across year groups.
