Music
Christian value: LOVE
At Kirby Hill, our music curriculum is guided by our Christian value of LOVE and the belief that “All things are possible for one who believes.” From EYFS to Year 6, children explore singing, instruments, songwriting, and music theory through a rich and engaging programme. From Year 1 onwards this is delivered by Junior Jam Music specialists teachers.
Every child is supported to develop confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of music. Lessons are designed to be inclusive, inspiring, and progressive, allowing pupils to perform, compose, and appreciate music from a variety of cultures. Music at Kirby Hill is not just about learning notes - it’s about expressing ideas, celebrating each other’s achievements, and connecting with the wider community.
By the time they leave primary school, pupils are confident performers, creative thinkers, respectful listeners, and loving members of the community, carrying forward the joy and power of music into the next stage of their education.

Progression of Skills in Music
At Kirby Hill C of E Primary School, we offer a wide range of musical experiences throughout the year to inspire, engage, and celebrate every child’s talents. Our planned activities include:
-
Singing in assemblies - All pupils from EYFS to Year 6 take part regularly, developing confidence, vocal skills, and a sense of community.
-
KS1 and KS2 Choir - Pupils from Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 can join their Key Stage School choir, performing at school events and special occasions.
-
KS2 Young Voices - Pupils participate in this large-scale choral event, representing the school in a professional concert setting.
-
End-of-term extravaganzas - Every term, pupils perform in showcases of learning, celebrating their musical achievements with parents and the school community.
-
Nativity and Christmas Show – Pupils from EYFS and Key Stage 1 take part in the Nativity, while older pupils contribute to the Christmas performances, either as performers or supporting singers.
-
Easter Performance - Pupils across the school participate in a musical celebration of the Easter story.
-
End-of-year Musical Extravaganza - Pupils from all year groups showcase their talents in a large-scale performance involving singing, instruments, and composition.
The school also works with Sowerby Music Foundation: Music for Life, providing a whole-school concert and targeted musical workshops for smaller groups once a year. This gives children the opportunity to work with professional musicians from a range of musical backgrounds, developing their skills, creativity, and confidence. We always rotate which classes participate and some pupils perform in workshops or the concert, while others engage as active listeners, gaining inspiration from professional musicians.
We also offer a range of 1:1 and group music tuition through the North Yorkshire Music Service. These sessions are available for pupils across different year groups. For more information, please contact the school office.
